Austin’s bike sharing system is celebrating the legalization of same sex marriage with a special RideWithPride bike.
Anytime the blue bike with a rainbow-colored basket gets checked out during July, Austin B-cycle will donate $4 to the Equality Texas Foundation, up to $2,000. The Equality Texas Foundation is a local non-profit that works for equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Texans.
The blue bike stands out – all other Austin B-cycle bikes are red.
“The Supreme Court’s decision to recognize the fundamental human dignity of same sex couples who wish to marry is worthy of celebration,” says Elliott McFadden, executive director of Austin B-cycle. “Equality Texas has been on the front lines working for LGBT civil rights, and we have developed the #RideWithPride campaign to honor the work they continue to do.”
To qualify, the bike must be checked out and returned to a different station, or checked out for at least 5 minutes and returned to the same station.
“The marriage victory is not the time to rest,” said Equality Texas executive director Chuck Smith. “Victory is the time to use this as fuel to power forward, to continue the mission, and to not stop until every Texan has full equality. Hop on an Austin B-Cycle bike and help us ride towards full equality for all Texans.”
Austin B-cycle launched in December 2013. The non-profit organization manages the bike share system on behalf of the city of Austin. For more information go here.
