I’ve landed in Colorado, where I’m doing some alpine skiing this week at Steamboat Springs.
I’m also planning to learn how to ski jump, which has me quaking in my boots just a little bit. (Note to self, point skis downhill and relax. Gravity will do the rest.)
Today’s conditions weren’t bad – all of the West is having a bit of a bad snow year, but things have improved in the last few weeks. Steamboat Springs, where I’m skiing through Wednesday, when I plan to drive down to Copper Mountain, got some snow two days ago and a little more yesterday. Today dawned gray and cloudy, with skies like dryer lint, and I tracked down some friends from Austin who are here for a long weekend.
We skied some bumps and trees and wrapped things up with a beer afterward at the base. I’m headed out shortly to check out the fancy dining scene.
Tomorrow, it’s more skiing and exploring. There’s snow in the forecast, too.
And check back on Tuesday, when I’m going to attempt that ski jump. It’s still my Year of Adventure, after all. I’m hoping to get someone to video tape if for me.
